No polyurethane foam
Since the 1950s and the advent of gasoline-based foam, all sofas have been manufactured in more or less the same way.
A standard sofa consists of
- up to 40 kg of gasoline-based plastic foam
- glued plywood
- synthetics in upholstery and threads
- plastic joints and feet
- flame retardants and preservative chemicals
These synthetic substances end:
- in our oceans
- in the air of our home (remember that smell when you unpack new furniture?)
- in a landfill because it is almost impossible to recycle and separate all the elements
- in the water in the form of microplastics
- and eventually in our food chain, as with most animals.
Our range of biosofa seats is 100% natural and completely biodegradable.
It is also built to last for generations, it is a product that lasts longer and is healthy. A classic polyurethane product is made from one block that just gets tired and has to be thrown away. Biosofa is in layers. The layers can be individually repaired and replaced if necessary. The product you rest on is healthy, more comfortable and will last a generation – or two.
Wood
Solid wood is the basis of everything that biosofa offers.
Biosofa sofas last so long because they have a basic frame made of solid beech wood. No plywood. No agglomerates. Simply pure stuff, responsibly grown in nature and renewable.
Biosofas contain only #FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified European ash, spruce and beech #wood. The wood comes only from forests where collection is #guaranteed and controlled by this organization. FSC is actively involved in supporting responsible land use and continuous reforestation of collection areas.
Bamboo - a sustainable sprinter.
FSC certified #bamboo is one of the fastest growing renewable resources in the world. Within a few months, it reaches its final length of up to 20 meters and absorbs large amounts of CO2.
A single bamboo plant consists of several canes, and new shoots will grow from the mother plant every year. In general, 20-25% of the canes in a sustainable bamboo forest can be harvested each year. The plant does not die after harvest, so no deforestation.
Bamboo is used in the Disfatto series as a platform and occasionally for the finish of certain tables such as the Dzen.
Filling
Latex - soft and firm.
100% natural latex is distilled from Hevea plants and has extraordinary antibacterial properties. It is the most flexible material in nature, able to instantly return to its original shape after any stress: a unique property that is paralleled only by human skin.
Latex has a higher specific gravity and buoyancy than polyurethane foam, thus providing the advantage of softness, flexibility and breathability at the same time. All latex used in the biosofa is #certified by the #Euro Latex and #Oekotex brands.
Real goose down - or vegan options?
All biosofa upholstered sofas and pillows are made of real goose feathers. They are a light, insulating material capable of maintaining a stable body temperature. All our feathers are RDS (Responsible Down Standard) certified to ensure that animals are treated cruelty-free.
If desired, any feathers can be replaced with another type of natural filling, resulting in a completely vegan product.
Herbal and oil foam.
In rare cases, latex is unable to do its job due to its weight. At the moment this ONLY applies to the Quartz chair we offer and is clearly marked. For quartz, we use a special healing herb and foam based on natural oils as a filler.
It is the only non-compostable component that is used in the biosofa. It is certified, non-allergenic and safe for children.
Textile
Flax - a fresh and wonderful luxury grown in Europe.
Beloved and favorite textile, pure linen. It is a natural textile woven from the fibers of the flax plant. It is very strong, absorbent and dries faster than cotton. The use of flax has been documented for thousands of years and has its own mention already in the Bible. Linen is produced and spun in Belgium and France.
Cotton - a natural hard worker.
Certified and recycled Oekotex cotton is used for the inner part of the biosofa sofa sets. This serves as an inner lining, padding, seams and is also included in the zippers used. The cotton inner layers used also allow our covers to be removable wherever possible.
Certified cotton is also an economical and durable choice as an outer cover fabric that is easy to wash.
Silk - royal fabric.
Silk is a natural protein fiber that is obtained from the cocoon of silkworm larvae.
The shimmering appearance of silk is due to the triangular prismatic structure of the silk fiber, which allows the silk fabric to refract incoming light at different angles, creating different colors. It is used sporadically in biosofa products, you can find it in the luxury biosofa cushions offered.
Wool - ultra soft and fire resistant.
Wool is popular for the padding layers of biosofa seats, where it is used to add structure or to separate the layers. Wool absorbs sound and has a natural flame resistance, making it the material of choice for high-risk environments such as airplanes and trains.
Leather - yes, but chrome free, sustainable and European.
Biosofa only works with leather that is made with vegetable and chrome-free mineral tanning. Our manufacturer works with skins left over from food production and has a certified wastewater treatment cycle and permanently certified production.
This is how we can offer an extremely durable and anti-allergic material - for those who like leather.
Felt, Jute, Metal springs
Recycled cotton felt
Additional layers of recycled cotton felt are applied to the inner padding to protect the latex cells from dust and damage. In addition to protection, this layer will also provide a firmer feel and keep the relatively wobbly latex foam compact and in the correct desired shape. In addition, this layer of cotton felt also supports the smooth running of the final fabric cover and does not create any creases or folds.
Jute - strong and much better than plastic.
In the biosofa seats, jute strips are used to support the basic padding and create structure on the wooden frames. It also serves as an insert that provides the bonding material between the sofa frame and the latex foam.
Jute is a vegetable textile fiber obtained from the bark of plant stems. It is 100% biodegradable and recyclable. It has high tensile strength and low stretch and provides the product with a high level of transpiration.
Steel instead of plastic.
The metal parts of biosofa sofas are made of untreated or polished steel. High resistance and complete reusability in case of recycling are its main features.
Steel is used in details such as the springs that are under the padding and in the zippers.
All the staples used in the production process are also made of this material.
Gold, silver, brass
Sparkle and shine, but naturally... Biosofa works with precious metals for certain finishes. For example, Enrico's library is covered in 24 carat gold. Silver and brass are also used, for example on sofa legs or in small biosofa coffee tables.
Precious metals are deposited by electroplating, the process involves electroplating, that is, an electric current is passed through a salt solution/solution of the precious metals. Thus, a very thin layer is applied to a steel or iron object.
It's all about the people
In biosofa, what is included in the manufactured sofas matters deeply. All latex, textile, threads, wood and metal parts come from Italy and most of them even within 10 km around the village of Lentate, in the Brianza region between Milan and the beautiful Lake Como.
We know all our suppliers personally. We come and meet them, inspect them and make sure they use materials with the green certifications we require.
We prefer to shop locally. The local variant is also preferred in production for another reason. Not only does it ensure control over what goes into the product, it also keeps our carbon footprint as low as possible.
Independent certification
The sustainability of the biosofa is independently controlled.
The Forest Stewardship Council and the Forest Certification Promotion Program ensure that products contain wood from responsibly harvested and verified forests that meet FSC's demanding ecological, social and economic standards.
Biosofa only uses FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified European ash, spruce and beech wood.
Lumber comes only from forests where collection is guaranteed and controlled.
FSC is actively involved in supporting responsible land use and continuous afforestation of collection areas.
Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 is a globally uniform testing and certification system for raw textile materials, semi-finished products and final products thoroughly verified at every stage of production.
Biosofa uses only 100% natural textiles that are awarded the Oeko-Tex standard and certification and are 100% plastic-free, such as 100% cotton, linen and silk.
For a healthy indoor climate, it is important that products used indoors have very low emissions and comply with the official European standard E1 (EN 717-1).
All wood compounds used in bisosofa meet this standard, with some of them even meeting the strictest (unofficial) emission class E0 available.
The 100% natural latex is distilled from the Hevea plant and has exceptional antibacterial properties as well as a higher specific gravity and buoyancy than polyurethane foam.
It provides the advantage of softness, flexibility and breathability at the same time. All our latex is certified by the Euro Latex brand.
Our sofas are made of real goose down, a light insulating material capable of maintaining a stable body temperature.
All feathers used in biosofa products are RDS (Responsible Down Standard) certified and cruelty-free.
If desired, any feathers can be replaced with wool filling to obtain a completely vegan product.
We offer all products from the biosofa range with the option of #personalization, custom production in any variant, size, color. Do not hesitate to contact us for more information.
