FAQ

  • ARE TERRACOTTA PLANTS FROST RESISTANT?
Each flowerpot, statue, amphora and other of our imported terracotta products are made from a rare clay found only in Impruneta and sourced from a local quarry (approx. 200 square kilometers), which is why its value is so rare. Production takes place according to traditional techniques and procedures. The furnaces are heated to more than 1000°C for 6 days. Thanks to this process, all products are resistant from -30 degrees to tropical heat. Even in this case, however, it is advisable to follow the recommendations given in the question "How to winterize products?", in order to ensure the longest possible lifespan of the terracotta. We regularly deliver terracotta from Impruneta to Norway, Denmark, Finland and other Nordic countries where it has been used for years.
  • HOW TO WINTER POTS?
Thanks to the properties of Impruneta clay, all our products are frost-resistant down to -30 °C. However, we would like to provide you with some useful tips for the winter season, how to properly handle terracotta even in the cold winter season:
  • HOW TO TRANSPLANT PLANTS INTO TERRACOTTA?
Repotting should be the natural way for proper plant growth, because when you change the pot to a terracotta one, the plants can grow healthier and bloom more. When buying a new terracotta flower pot, we recommend following the following short tips. So how to properly transplant plants into our terracotta pots? - Cover the drainage hole (the hole at the bottom of the flowerpot) with some stones or terracotta pieces (fragment). - Put some clay in the bottom of the pot to facilitate drainage and aeration of the soil. - Fill the new pot with soil and place the plant in the pot.
  • WHY IS THE COLOR OF TERRACOTTA NOT ALWAYS THE SAME?
The color of each product is unique, it is determined by the chemical and physical components of Impruneta clay, which are created during its firing. Among the most specific and decisive chemical components in the coloring of the final product is iron oxide, which determines the pink color typical of the Impruneta area. The entire production method allows the naturalness of the material to be preserved, as our producers use only water and clay, and the baking is done in a traditional way, without the addition of chemicals to change the final color. For this reason, the products may have slightly different shades from each other. Sometimes it is possible to see the handprints of the craftsman who made them. Over time, the products acquire a surface patina of natural aging and the colors tend to be uniform.
  • WHAT IS WHITE PATINA ON TERRACOTTA?
Clay from Impruneta is rich in mineral salts, which sometimes create a white patina on the surface of the vessels, called "saltpeter" or "saltpeter". This happens mainly in winter. It should be noted that this phenomenon does not affect the quality of the product, on the contrary, this fact testifies to the quality of craftsmanship and high-quality terracotta. Very often you can notice that a white patina appears for a few hours and then it is absorbed again - this is a natural phenomenon, but sometimes it can be permanent. If the patina does not suit you aesthetically, in the second case the patina can be removed with water and a brush.
  • ARE THE DIMENSIONS AND WEIGHT OF THE FLOWER THE SAME AS YOU STATE?
Due to the completely handmade nature of our products, weights and measures may vary slightly from those shown on the website or in the catalogue. Even different pieces of the same model may vary slightly due to craftsmanship. Therefore, the sizes written are true, but due to manual processing, slight differences are possible between different pieces of the same model.
  • WHAT DOES THE "FORNACI STORICHE DELL'IMPRUNETA" MARK MEAN?
Since 2005, our suppliers have been founding members of the "Association of Historic and Artistic Kilns Impruneta", which is committed to strengthening the quality and culture of this craft and production. Products from our suppliers are marked with a mark that ensures the highest level of each individual item, in which the unmistakable touches of the craftsman and the living power of tradition are clearly traceable. This association was created to protect this craft from manufacturers who use molds and low-quality clay for their production, which spoils their good reputation.
  • WHAT DOES THE "CAT" STAND MEAN?"
The CAT stamp stands for "Artistic and Traditional Ceramic". The CAT mark certifies: - the origin of the clay is Impruneta - also a product manufactured here, - the quality of the manually followed production procedure according to the regulation. The aim of this title is not only to protect the creators, but also the consumers, for whom the brand will serve as a guarantee of the quality of terracotta clay from Impruneta.
  • WHY IS THERE A HOLE IN THE BOTTOM OF THE FLOWER?
It is essential and necessary that the drainage hole always remains free and free from blockage by leaves, etc., because stagnation of water could cause damage to the flowerpot and possibly rotting of the plant's roots. In addition, it is advisable to place mats (wooden or terracotta) under the flowerpots so that they do not stand on the ground, or a saucer so that the water can easily drain through the drainage hole.
  • ARE SUBDIMENSIONS NECESSARY UNDER THE FLOWER POT?
The trays are used to collect the dressing and are suitable if you don't want the water to flow onto the floor or if you want to protect the floor inside or on the terrace from water. For proper drainage, we recommend using mats under the flowerpots so that the water can easily flow out of the drainage hole onto the ground or into the saucer.
  • WHAT POT FOR HERBS?
Definitely a terracotta pot from Impruneta, because the clay from Impruneta belongs to the #best quality clays in the world. These clays can be used to produce products with high mechanical strength and porosity, which are ideal for #healthy plant life. The clay is porous and drains water over its entire surface, so the roots of your herbs will not rot, but breathe and your herbs will love it. These flower pots are completely natural, made only of clay and water.
  • FLOWER POT - HOW TO MAKE IT?
Terracotta from Impruneta, is #most famous, #most quality and #frost-resistant. This clay is the best in the world for its mechanical strength and #mrazuvzdornost thanks to the presence of galestra, a soft rock typical of the Impruneta area, which provides the finished product with frost resistance down to -30°C. This claim is based on proven durability tests that Impruneta clay products have had to go through. Impruneta clay has a granular texture that makes it rough to the touch, reddish with white hues. Flowerpots, amphorae and more made from this clay are top of the market and are often found in very important gardens around the world. Thanks to its uniqueness, the small area for mining and the annually rising value of this land, it is considered an investment and its price is therefore more expensive. The design is sophisticated and very well executed. If the vessels are made by the Colombino technique (completely by hand), it is difficult to have perfectly identical copies of the same article of manufacture. Each piece is therefore completely unique. Alternatively, it is possible to work with a plaster mold, which is also made by hand. The firing process can reach up to 1020-1030 degrees and takes approximately 36 hours, followed by another 70 hours for cooling. Perhaps not everyone knows that in 1419 Filippo Brunelleschi chose terracotta from Impruneta for the construction of the Dome of the Florence Cathedral.

Its great advantage is that it can be combined with almost all colors in the interior. It is a color that brings liveliness and warmth, which we would call a pleasant atmosphere. “Why is terracotta so popular? Thanks to the association with nature! In many areas of life, we turn to what is good for our planet. This tendency is also reflected in the interior design. Terracotta already refers to nature in its name (from the Latin terra – earth; terra cotta – fired clay).
