Terracotta Sphinx Statue
The sphinx is a collective name for the type of statues that were created throughout the history of ancient Egypt and were one of the classic ways of portraying the pharaoh. They served mainly to celebrate his greatness and power. They could be of various sizes (from the size of a paperweight to several meter tall statues) and functioned either individually or as a series of identical statues lining the path to a palace or temple. The sphinx was most often depicted as a seated lion's body with a human head, on which was placed a pharaonic headdress called a nemes.
