Hebe, symbol of eternal youth and bearer of the cup of the gods. Her gestures embody hospitable generosity and are feminine as she offers the cup containing the elixir of eternal youth. The gentle flowing movement of her body, all the more elegant for her soft terracotta skin. Hebe is clad in delicately gathered drapery that lines her legs and accentuates rather than hides her shape. Her upper body is girlish, her shape just hinted at as if she were wearing some light clothing. Cano's art comes at the end of a tradition in which the pleasing decorative aspect of the whole was valued over the effectiveness of the individual parts, and when it was also still artistically acceptable to depict ephemeral, non-plastic concepts such as floating and wind, very much in the vein of Baroque ideals of representation.
