The detailed craftsmanship of John Dory's fish is beautifully depicted in this iconic figurine, skillfully handcrafted from beachwood and hand-decorated. A wonderful and original idea for a gift, it will beautifully complement a seaside home or boat decoration.
John Dory, often called St. Petra, is considered the greatest delicacy among fish dishes. His name is associated with the legend of St. To Peter, who took a gold coin out of the mouth of a caught fish and left a fingerprint on its body. Even the name John Dory probably comes from the Italian term "janitore", which means gatekeeper (St. Peter is the heavenly key-keeper and welcomes newcomers to heaven at the gate). For a change, the German name "Heringskönig" (herring king) refers to the herring's staple food. Saw-bellies live mostly solitary or in small groups in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean (from Norway to South Africa) and in the Pacific. They are comfortable at depths of 5-200 m, they go to the sea level to hunt pelagic fish, which are species that live close to the surface. However, they also feed on cuttlefish and crustaceans. They are usually caught in trawl nets, and if they appear in a herring net, fishermen consider it a good sign.
