Each pepper mill is individually handcrafted by Alan Huey in a small shop in Wake Forest, North Carolina. Each piece used for the body of the pepper mill is carefully selected to match the rustic nature of the pepper mill. Materials consist of wood (exotic, highly malleable and tropical hardwoods). The body of the pepper mill is shaped on a freehand lathe. Each pepper mill is unique due to natural variations in the grain of the wood, natural variations in the color of the material and free rotation (shaping). Before the pepper mill body is connected to the mechanical hardware, it is shaped and smoothed through a 12-15 step finishing process depending on the body type. The body is then polished and waxed with a hard, durable wax that helps protect its surface. Every step is done by hand. The artist uses only the best available pepper mill accessories with hard durable plating and hardened steel or fired ceramic grinding mechanisms. Once the pepper mill body and mechanical hardware are connected, the pepper mill undergoes a final polishing process. The goal is not just to make pepper mills, but to produce beautiful art that is useful.
